The Common Core State Standards
This school year we are teaching the Common Core State Standards (CCSS).
The CCSS are listed to provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that students need for success in
college and careers.
Watch this video to help you better understand the
CCSS http://www.cgcs.org/Page/334
Also, visit their website http://www.corestandards.org/ELA-Literacy
We use a variety of programs and resources everyday.
The CCSS
Harcourt StoryTown,
Discovery Phonics,
Reading A-Z,
Read Works,
and more!
The use of these programs allows us to differentiate and achieve success! The Common Core State Standards are challenging and expectations are high.
Working together, becoming familiar with the CCSS and helping your child at home are extremly important for student success.

Math: Investigating Investigations
We teach the Common Core State Standards in Math.
Our math instruction includes “Investigating Investigations”. Students will work as a whole class, small groups and independently to explore and expand their mathematical thinking. We challenge students to use a variety of strategies as well as "prove", "validate" and "explain" what they do.

We also use "Number Talks" as part of our math instruction. Number Talks used quick, engaging daily routines that help develop fluency in mental math and number relationships.
Science:Foss Kits
We will use the Delaware Science Kits for our science curriculum. We will
study three areas this year. The three areas are "trees", "weather and me" and "push, pull and go". All of these kits are hands on and make learning fun!
Social Studies: Harcourt Horizon
The Social Studies Harcourt curriculum teaches us about our community and the world around us. We will focus on what it means to be a good citizen in our school and community. We will also learn about the different holidays and how people celebrate around the world.
Social Skills: Al’s Pals
Al’s Pals is an interactive program that teaches children healthy ways to
recognize and handle their feelings. There are three puppets, Al, Ty, and Kisha.
The puppets teach songs, tell stories and ask questions to teach the kids how to
make healthy choices.
Reading Intervention (RINT) / Math Intervention (MINT)
In addition to our regular scheduled reading and math time, students will
also receive 30 minutes of reading intervention and math intervention (see
schedule for times). The goal of these interventions is to help students by
providing additional support or challenge based on their needs. Students may
switch to another Kindergarten teacher during this time.
